Wm Morrison Supermarkets
Wm Morrison Supermarkets (or Morrisons) is a chain of supermarkets in the UK. It is operated by the company Wm Morrison Supermarkets plc. It was founded in William Morrison in 1899, initially as an egg and butter merchant in Bradford, England. From the early 1900s the company used the name Wm Morrison (Provisions) Limited. In 1958 it opened a small shop in the town centre, followed by its first supermarket "Victoria", in 1961. In 1967 it became a public company listed on the London Stock Exchange. As of early 2003 it had 119 supermarkets in Great Britain, mainly in the English Midlands and the north of England.
On January 9, 2003 it made an offer to purchase the much larger chain Safeway (UK). On 11 February 2004 shareholders of both Wm Morrison and Safeway voted to approve the merger of the two companies, subject to the result of two High Court rulings due later in the month. Once all objections have been resolved, the new company will begin trading on 8 March.
