JONES, William, 1760-1831

JONES, William, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1760; completed academic studies; served in the Revolutionary War, joining a company of volunteers at the age of sixteen; moved to Charleston, S.C.; returned to Pennsylvania; elected as a Republican to the Seventh Congress (March 4, 1801-March 3, 1803); appointed Secretary of the Navy in the Cabinet of President Madison and served from January 12, 1813, to December 2, 1814; president of the Bank of the United States 1816-1819; collector of customs in Philadelphia, Pa., 1827-1829; died in Bethlehem, Pa., September 6, 1831; interment in St. Peter’s Churchyard, Philadelphia, Pa.
