Warren Mitchell

Warren Mitchell, (born 1926, Stoke Newington, London) is a British actor.

Best known for his role as the bigoted cockney West Ham supporter, Alf Garnett, Warren Mitchell has a long and distingushed career on stage and television. Actually a Jewish, Tottenham supporter, Mitchell joined the RAF in company with his contemporary Richard Burton in 1944.

After the war, Mitchell abandoned his training in physics and pursued a theatrical career, his big break occurring with the launch of Alf Garnett in a Comedy Playhouse pilot edition of Till Death Us Do Part with Dandy Nichols, Una Stubbs and Anthony Booth (now Tony Blair's father-in-law).

The fact that he is so well-known as Alf Garnett has tended to overshadow the fact that Mitchell is actually a highly versatile actor.
