Warren County is a county located in the U.S. State of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 19,972. Its county seat is Warrenton6.

History

The county was formed in 1779 from the northern half of Bute County. It was named for Joseph Warren of Massachusetts, a physician and general in the American Revolutionary War who was killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill.

In 1881, parts of Warren County, Franklin County, and Granville County were combined to form Vance County.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,149 km² (444 mi²). 1,110 km² (429 mi²) of it is land and 39 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.40% water.

The county is divided into twelve townships: Fishing Creek, Fork, Hawtree, Judkins, Nutbush, River, Roanoke, Sandy Creek, Shocco, Sixpound, Smith Creek, and Warrenton.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 19,972 people, 7,708 households, and 5,449 families residing in the county. The population density is 18/km² (47/mi²). There are 10,548 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (25/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 38.90% White, 54.49% Black or African American, 4.79% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.79% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 1.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,708 households out of which 28.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.20% are married couples living together, 17.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.30% are non-families. 26.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.50% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 17.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 96.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,351, and the median income for a family is $33,602. Males have a median income of $26,928 versus $20,787 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,716. 19.40% of the population and 15.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.90% are under the age of 18 and 20.80% are 65 or older.
