Wang Fei
Faye Wong, or Wang Fei (王菲 Pinyin: Wáng Fēi) (born August 8, 1969), is a Chinese singer. She is extremely popular in Asia, and has also been an actress in several films.
Born in Beijing, she moved with her family to Hong Kong. For her early albums, she used the stage name "Shirley Wong" (王靖雯) and stuck to mostly traditional Cantopop fare. After a brief stay in the United States, she returned home (as marked by the Coming Home album) and went through a phase of showing some R&B influence.
In following albums, she moved away from this and produced works of considerable originality and even "alternative" flavor. She went back to the name "Faye" and began making albums in her mother tongue Mandarin as well as Cantonese. Her most recent recordings have been mostly in Mandarin, though each album usually has a few Cantonese songs. There were also a handful of songs in English, mostly on her earlier albums, though she has often done cover versions (translated into Chinese) of songs by singers such as Tori Amos and Cocteau Twins. Her Chinese version of The Cranberries' "Dreams" is played several times in the movie Chungking Express.
She also did an album (Faye's Decadent Music) of cover songs originally done by her idol Teresa Teng, who tragically died shortly before its release.
Her claim to fame in the Western world is the end title song "Eyes on me" for the video game Final Fantasy VIII, which she was reported to have been paid one million dollars to sing. She has also done commercials for Pepsi.
She had a daughter Dou Jing Tong born on January 3, 1997 by ex-husband and rock musician Dou Wei. The baby's voice appears on the title song of the Only Love Strangers album.
