This list is less than canonical, as it includes one animation/live-action hybrid (Song of the South) while inexplicably excluding others (Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, etc.). It also includes Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree, which is a short, not a feature, and was included in the later entry The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Also, the numbering does not match Disney's, which counts the recent Brother Bear as the 43rd animated feature, not the 45th.

Methodology
"The list" is consistently defined as being only features produced by Disney, not co-produced with another company (such as the Pixar movies like Toy Story and Finding Nemo), nor simply distributed by Disney (such as the films of Studio Ghibli, like Spirited Away). Only movies that received significant theatrical releases are counted, which excludes many straight-to-video sequels. Films created for and shown only at theme parks, such as Philharmagic! are not counted. Live-action / animation hybrids are also not included (hence the exclusion of Mary Poppins, Song of the South, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, and similar films from the second list), though early versions of the list counted So Dear To My Heart. Films created by divisions other than Walt Disney Feature Animation, such as the television and home video divisions, don't count, which explains the absence of the theatrically-released "movies" Return to Neverland, The Tigger Movie, and others. Thusfar, completely computer-generated animation has been excluded, which explains the absence of Dinosaur, though this might change if Disney, as widely expected, reduces or eliminates its cel-animation efforts in favor of CGI.
Discussion
The idea of numbering the Disney animated features seems to have emerged from the company's home video division, and numbers were assigned before unambiguous rules were reached for what films would qualify. The presence and absence of several films continues to be a topic of debate among film scholars:
- Arguably should be included:
- Victory Through Air Power was a feature film entirely animated by Disney, but is not included, and as a product of World War II propaganda little seen since its release, is generally only known to scholars and completists
- Dinosaur was created in-house at Disney, but is computer-animated, not cel-animated.
- All animated features produced entirely by Disney, regardless of division or department. This would include The Tigger Movie, Piglet's Big Movie, Return to Neverland, Doug's 1st Movie and other (and frankly, lesser) movies.
