Bulgaria, called today Volga Bulgaria is a historic state that existed between 7--13th centuries around the confluence of Volga and Kama. It was founded by Kotrag Khan, son of Kubrat Khan around 660. The capital was Bulgar city. Now in its place is Kazan, Tatarstan. Volga Bulgaria was conquered by Mongols and ceased to exist in 1236.
A large part of its population was turkic. Modern Chuvashs and Tatars are descendants of Volga Bulgars.
