University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology
University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, or UMIST for short, is based in the centre of the city of Manchester, England. It specialises in technical and scientific subjects, and is a major centre for research.
UMIST gained its Royal Charter in the 1950s and became an autonomous university in 1993. Previously its degrees were awarded by the University of Manchester.
On 5 March 2003 it was announced that UMIST and the University of Manchester are to merge in the autumn of 2004 to form the largest conventional university in the United Kingdom.
