Culture, Sports, and Traditions
The Diliman community, humorously called the Diliman Republic has a unique culture among the universities in the country. It is the only university in Metro Manila that has its own extensive system of jeepney transportation owing to its huge size. The campus encompasses many residential areas and students often feel a sense of solidarity with the community residents. U.P. Diliman is also the only university in the region that has no gates to speak of. This supposedly reflects on the highly prized academic freedom of the university.
U.P. Diliman is a member of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and participates in all events. U.P. has consistently placed in the top three for the past several years.
Two of the most-awaited events in the campus is the Lantern Parade, held on the last day before the Christmas break, and the U.P. Fair, held every February. The Lantern Parade is a parade wherein various groups in the universities create are parade Christmas lanterns around the Academic Oval. The U.P. Fair, organized by the University Student Council, is a week-long event held at the Sunken Garden that features nightly music concerts and amusement park rides.
