Tommy Ricketts

Tommy Ricketts was born in Middle Arm, White Bay, Newfoundland (then a British colony) who fought under the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. During an incident on October 14th, 1918 in battle againt German troops, the Newfoundland troops ran out of ammunition, and Private Tommy Ricketts ran across 100 yards, in the line of fire, to retrieve ammunition and supplies. Returning from gathering the goods, Ricketts and another soldier, returned fire against the Germans, and captured machine guns, field guns and German prisoners. For this incident, Ricketts was awarded the Victoria Cross by King George V Himself. At the investiture, King George introduced Ricketts as "the youngest VC in My army."
