The Princess Alice was a passenger steamer. On the evening of September 3, 1878, it collided with the steam collierBywell Castle and sank into the Thames in under four minutes. Of the approximately 700 passengers, over 600 were lost (sources vary on the actual numbers). Both ships noticed the other but steered in the same direction, in violation of the rules of right-of-way.
