The Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) gives patent applicants a simplified and cheaper procedure for obtaining protection for their ideas worldwide. A majority of the world's countries are signatories to the PCT, including all of the major industrialised countries. A single filing results in a single search (and preliminary examination report), after which the examination is handled by the relevant national or regional authorities.
