National Academy of Sciences
The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is a United States government established corporation supporting scientific research. Its official journal is the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. As its name suggests, it is the national academy recognised by corresponding bodies in other countries for negotiations over research collaboration.
- private, non-profit, self-perpetuating "society of distinguished scholars engaged in scientific and engineering research, dedicated to the furtherance of science and technology and to their use for the general welfare"
- has a mandate that requires it to advise the US government on scientific and technical matters
- charter granted by Congress in 1863
- membership is approximately 1,900 members and 300 foreign associates -- more than 170 have won Nobel Prizes
- election to academy is in recognition of achievements in original research -- considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded a scientist or engineer
