Murtala Mohammed was a military officer who overthrew the military government of Nigeria under Yakubu Gowan on July 29, 1975, but was himself killed on February 13, 1976 in an abortive coup, and succeeded by his chief of staff Olusegun Obasanjo. He was 38 years old.
