MMS is compatible with WAP and the faster GPRS technologies.

Typically, MMS uses SMS as a notification bearer and then transfers information via WAP over GPRS or CSD. MMS supports sound, pictures, text, video (3GPP standards) but capaibilities are device/vendor specific. MMS is not to be confused with EMS which is simply SMS with additional payload capabilties.
