Metamorphic library steps
Metamorphic Library Steps constitute an antique piece of furniture which is basically a foldable staircase that can be transformed into a chair or into a desk form such as a small writing table, or library table. When it transforms itself into a desk it can also be considered as a Mechanical desk.
Metamorphic library steps started being built in a regular fashion in the middle of the 18th century for the homes of the nobility or those of gentlemen of means in Europe. They were intended for a large room used as a private office and as a place to house the owner's collection of books. This was a person's private library. In this early period such rooms usually had a very high ceiling, encouraging the owner to stack his ever growing collection of books on high bookshelves. The topmost shelves were normally out of reach and this led to the creation of movable library steps or library stairs as a domestic furniture form.
As the decades advanced the number of specialised rooms in the typical mansion increased, and the existing ones, such as the library, had to shrink in size. This led to the invention of many types of dual use furniture forms, such as the Games table desk, and also led to the creation of metamorphic library steps.
