Menhir

A menhir at Carnac, Brittany - (larger version)

A menhir is a large, upright stone (monolith or obelisk), usually of prehistoric origin. The word "menhir" originated in the Breton language.

The shape of a menhir tends to be square, tapering toward the top. They are generally roughly-hewn.

Menhirs are featured prominently in the Asterix comic series, here with a teardrop shape.
