Lot (département)
Lot is a French département in the southwest of France. It is named after the Lot River.
History
The département was created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790, in application of the law of December 22, 1789, from part of the province of Languedoc. Some of the original southeastern cantons were separated from it in 1808 to form the département of Tarn-et-Garonne. It originally extended much farther to the south and included the city of Montauban, but about one-fourth of this territory was taken in 1808 to form the département of Tarn-et-Garonne.
Geography
The département of Lot is part of the Midi-Pyrénées region. It borders the départements of Corrèze, Cantal, Aveyron, Tarn-et-Garonne, Lot-et-Garonne, and Dordogne.
