Llano Estacado

Llano Estacado is a region the southwestern United States that encompasses northeastern New Mexico and northwestern Texas. Llano Estacado is Spanish for "staked plains." It is the southern end of the Great Plains and is part of what was once called the Great American Desert. It is called the staked plain because Spanish explorer Francisco Coronado and his troops drove wooden stakes into the ground so that they could find their way out of the tall buffalo grass.
