List of regions in Japan

Japan is divided into eight regions:

Each contains a number of prefectures, except Hokkaido region composed of single Hokkaido prefecture.

The region is not an official administrative unit, but has been traditionally used as the regional division of Japan in education of geography at schools. While Japan has eight High Courts, the jurisdiction of each high court is not identical to the prefectures belonging to each region.
