Institute of Radio Engineers

The Institute of Radio Engineers, known by its acronym IRE was formed from two largely local organizations, the 'Society of Wireless and Telegraph Engineers' and the 'Wireless Institute'.

Many of the original members of the IRE were also members of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and both organizations continued to have members in common until they merged to form the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 1963.
