Hocking Hills region

The Hocking Hills region of Ohio is a deeply-dissected area of the Allegheny Plateau. High cliffs and narrow, deep gorges are formed in the Blackhand Sandstone, so named because of Native American graphics in the formation near Newark, Ohio. The State of Ohio owns various lands in this area in the form of state parks, state nature preserves, and state forest:

Hocking Hills State Park includes Old Man's Cave, Cedar Falls, Cantwell Cliffs, and Ash Cave, and Rockbridge.

These features include spectacular cliffs, rockhouses, and waterfalls. This geologic area is similar to the Red River Gorge in Kentucky but on a somewhat smaller scale.

Also nearby are:

The Buckeye Trail runs through this area concurrently with the North Country Trail and America's Discovery Trail.
