The movie begins with Hilary and Jackie as children being taught dance and musical instruments, cello for Jackie and flute for Hilary. Jackie does not take practicing seriously at first, but when she does, she becomes real good real fast, quickly rising to international prominence. Hilary, on the other hand, plays in a community orchestra and marries the son of composer Gerald Finzi. Trailers and advertising material for the movie make a big deal about Jackie wanting Hilary's husband, but this is not as important in the overall plot of the movie. As Jackie ages, she grows ill, to the point of having to stop playing cello.
This movie was rated R by the MPAA for language and sexuality.
