Hawaiian mythology

Polynesia is a triangle of islands in the Pacific Ocean. Though the peoples were often many weeks of dangerous sailing away from each other, their religious beliefs share many similarities.

The early religion of Hawaii is called Huna. In Huna, each person has three selves. They are the "low" self the "middle" self and the "high" self. This is comparable to Freud's subconscious, conscious, and superconscious mind theory. One (unihi-pili) went to the underworld after death. The other, aumakua, joined the deceased's ancestors in the heavens.

Rangi and Papa are the two most important gods. Also important are Maui, Atea.
