Hagen

Map of Germany showing Hagen

Hagen is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located on the junction of the Lenne and Ruhr rivers. Hagen is a part of the Sauerland region, but bounded by the Ruhr area in the north. Population: 209,000.

Hagen was first mentioned about 800, but it was just a farm. The growth of the city began with the mining of coal and the production of steel. In the 20th century Hagen became a city with more than 100,000 inhabitants. Due to the destruction of the city in World War II there are few sights in Hagen.

Hagen is also the name of a mythical character in the Nibelungenlied saga, a hero procedent of Tronège. Hagen killed Sigurd during a hunt, wounding him on the only part of his body which wasn't indestructible.
