Grass Valley, California

Grass Valley is a city located in Nevada County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,922.

On May 15, 1902 in a field outside Grass Valley, Lyman Gilmore reportedly became the first person to fly a powered airplane (a steam-powered glider).

Geography

Grass Valley is located at 39°13'9" North, 121°3'30" West (39.219215, -121.058414)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.6 km² (4.1 mi²). 10.6 km² (4.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 10,922 people, 5,016 households, and 2,678 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,026.0/km² (2,660.2/mi²). There are 5,266 housing units at an average density of 494.7/km² (1,282.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 91.91% White, 0.27% African American, 1.34% Native American, 1.05% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.66% from other races, and 3.71% from two or more races. 6.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,016 households out of which 26.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.4% are married couples living together, 16.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 46.6% are non-families. 39.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.13 and the average family size is 2.80.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 22.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 81.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $28,182, and the median income for a family is $33,220. Males have a median income of $32,568 versus $21,915 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,877. 14.9% of the population and 12.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 20.0% are under the age of 18 and 6.3% are 65 or older.
