Goodwill Games

In response to the 1979 invasion of Afghanistan, President Carter boycotted the 1980 Olympics, causing the Soviet Block to boycott the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Created by Ted Turner in reaction to the political troubles surrounding the Olympics of the 1980s, the Goodwill Games were an early effort to make Seattle a "World Class City" that eventually culminated in the disatrous WTO Meeting in 1999.
