Family Reunion
(larger version)
Frédéric Bazille (1841 - 1870) was a brilliant young Impressionist painter, best known for his depiction of figures. His most famous work is a Family Reunion (1867-1868). He began studying medicine in 1862, when he met Pierre-Auguste Renoir and was drawn to the Impressionist movement. His friends included Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley]], and Edouard Manet. Born to a wealthy family, Bazille was able to support some of these artists, giving them space in his studio and materials to use. Bazille's career was cut short, when he was killed in the Franco-Prussian War.
