Flora
The term flora has several meanings in English:
- Flora is a collective term for plant life. The corresponding term for animals is fauna. In botany, the term refers to a listing of the species of plants found in a specified area, and in that respect differs from the vegetation, which is any description of the plants observed across the landscape.
- Flora was also the name of the Roman goddess of flowers, gardens, and the season of Spring. While she was otherwise a relatively minor figure in Roman mythology, being one among several fertility goddesses, her association with the spring gave her particular importance at the coming of springtime. Her festival, the Floralia, was held in April or early May and symbolized the renewal of the cycle of life, marked with dancing, drinking, and flowers. Her Greek equivalent was Chloris.
- Flora is a brand of butter-like spread, made by Unilever, in the UK. A former marketing slogan was "Are you a Flora man?"
- Flora is also a girls name.
- The asteroid 8 Flora
