Exile On Main Street

TheRollingStonesExileonMainStreetalbumcover.jpg
Exile on Main Street is a 1972 (see 1972 in music) album by the rock and roll band The Rolling Stones. Initially greeted with lukewarm reviews, the double LP has since been critically appraised and is now commonly considered one of the best albums in The Rolling Stones' entire catalogue. Musically diverse, Exile on Main Street explores influences from country music, blues and soul. The release of the album was supported by a North American tour. It was first time the Rolling Stones had been to the U.S. since the disaster at Altamont. The tour was documented in the never-released film Cocksucker Blues.

There have been at least two answer records to Exile on Main Street. These musical responses to the album include Pussy Galore's cassette only release of the same name (actually a cover album as well), and Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville, which was a song-by-song response to Exile on Main Street.

Exile on Main Street was a #1 hit on Billboard's Pop Albums chart (US). The singles "Happy" and "Tumbling Dice" hit #22 and #7, respectively, on the Pop Singles chart.
