Midlothian is one of 32 unitary council regions in Scotland. It borders onto South Lanarkshire, Scottish Borders, East Lothian, City of Edinburgh and West Lothian.
There was a historic county of the same name, which bordered West Lothian to the west, Lanarkshire and Peeblesshire to the south, and Berwickshire and East Lothian to the east. It included the city of Edinburgh, and was sometimes known as Edinburghshire.
