Dance Improvisation
Dance Improvisation focuses on the investigation of new movement and is most usually carried out inside the Contemporary Dance/Modern Dance genre. Development of individual movement material is facilitated through a variety of creative explorations. There is really no limit to the ways movement can be explored, and each dancer or instructor will have a different approach or emphasis to this, but dancers most commonly will explore different levels, shapes, and dynamics of movement, and different ways of interacting with other dancers.
Sometimes this can be difficult for people who have spent their whole lives not thinking about what they are physically doing every day, but letting their bodies operate on autopilot (which is what 99% of people do). Even for trained dancers who excel in one or more methods of dancing, they have in actual fact trained their bodies to fit another mould. Freeing one's mind from these habits, and our bodies from their moulds, can be stressful. Being willing to explore the unknown can be bewildering. Making shapes youve never made before and moving in dynamics you arent used to will almost certainly be a new experience for most people.
