Covington is a city located in Kenton County, Kentucky. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 43,370.

Geography

Covington is located at 39°3'54" North, 84°30'35" West (39.065111, -84.509594)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 35.4 km² (13.7 mi²). 34.0 km² (13.1 mi²) of it is land and 1.4 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.88% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 43,370 people, 18,257 households, and 10,132 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,274.4/km² (3,301.3/mi²). There are 20,448 housing units at an average density of 600.8/km² (1,556.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 87.05% White, 10.14% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 1.57% from two or more races. 1.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 18,257 households out of which 28.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.3% are married couples living together, 16.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.5% are non-families. 36.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 33.3% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $30,735, and the median income for a family is $38,307. Males have a median income of $31,238 versus $24,487 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,841. 18.4% of the population and 15.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 25.0% are under the age of 18 and 13.4% are 65 or older.
