Copper Island Classic
Copper Island is an island in Lake Superior comprising the northern part of what is often inaccurately called the Keweenaw Peninsula (in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States of America) but is in fact partly the Keweenaw Peninsula and partly Copper Island, which is separated from the rest of the Keweenaw Peninsula by Portage Lake and the Portage Lake Canal; it was formed by dredging in 1859 and the construction, in the 1860s, of a ship canal from Portage Lake, which was on the east side of the Keweenaw Peninsula, to Lake Superior on the west. The ship canal is 100 feet wide and 21 feet deep. (The island is called "Kuparisaari" [meaning "Copper Island"] by the Finnish settlers.) However, neither the United States Geological Survey nor the state of Michigan identify this area as an island or use this name.
Copper Island is the largest island in the continental United States.
Copper Island is connected to the rest of the Upper Peninsula by the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, the latest in a series of bridges between Hancock and Houghton. US41 crosses this bridge. The principal towns of Copper Island are Hancock and Calumet.
The Copper Island Classic is an ice hockey tournament contested annually between Hancock Central High School and Calumet High School, two high schools on the island.
