Chartreuse liqueur

The Chartreuse is an alcoholic liquor made with plants in Voiron (near Grenoble), France under the supervision of monks of the monastery of the Grande Chartreuse (Carthusian order).

There are actually two kinds of Chartreuse:

  • Green Chartreuse (55°) is a naturally green liquor made with 130 plants; its exact recipe is allegedly a trade secret of the monks;
  • Yellow Chartreuse (40°) is softer and more syrupy.

Other related alcoholics beverages are manufactured in the same facility (Génépi...).

Because of the color of the liquor, Chartreuse has also come to be the name of a yellow-green color. See, for instance, the table of X11 Color Names.
