Centennial Challenges
Series of prizes worth ~$20Mil US from the NASA budget
designed to get inventors and innovators into the arena, money is awarded on acually having built working hardware rather than proposals. Amongst the amature community this is widley viewed as a good method. Origions of this kind of prize are the early aero prizes of the 1920's eg Lindenberg's trans atlantic crossing, and are regarded as inspiring some of the biggest advances in aerospace technoligy.
