Baron Dacre

The title Baron Dacre has been created several times in the Peerage of England, everytime by writ. The first creation was for Ralph Dacre in 1321. In 1541, the ninth Baron was executed for murder, and the title was forfeit. Howver, it was restored in 1558.

In 1684, the fifteenth baron was made Earl of Sussex. At his death, the earldom became extinct, while the barony fell into abeyance. In 1741, the Sovereign terminated the abeyance in favour of Anne Barrett-Lennard. Later, the twenty-third baron was created Viscount Hampden. The Viscountcy was separated from the barony with the death of the fourth Viscount, when the barony fell into abeyance again. In 1970, the title was again called out of abeyance, this time in favour of Rachel Brand.

Meanwhile, the title has been created twice separately. The first of those creations was in 1461 for Ralph Dacre, at whose death the barony became extinct. The next was for Humphrey Dacre in 1482; that title became extinct in 1569.
