Notes
The Canadian "miscellaneous class" is for
breeds working towards full recognition.

The Barbet is a medium-sized French gundog. He stands 18 to 22 inches (46-56 cm) in height and weighs 33 to 55 pounds (15 to 25 kg). He is a prototypic water dog, with a long, woolly coat that is curly or wavy. Colours of the breed are black, chestnut, fawn, grey, and white, with or without markings; mixed colours are common.

Although he may not be the original source of the various water dog breeds (Poodle, Portuguese Water Dog, American Water Spaniel, etc.) he is thought to be quite close to the original type. His origin is lost in antiquity but probably stems from corded herding stock and perhaps griffon hounds. The breed is little known outside of France.

The Barbet’s personality is described as companionable, gay, obedient and intelligent. He is a capable retriever for waterfowl hunting and a faithful companion.

The breed is recognised by the FCI (Group 8, Breed 105) and is on the CKC's Miscellaneous list. A breed club in the USA is affiliated with the Club des Chiens d'Eau in France and offers a US-based registry service. The United Kennel Club also registers the breed.
