Aspen Hill, Maryland

Aspen Hill is an unincorporated area in Montgomery County, Maryland. It got its name from aspen trees that once were found there.

As an unincorporated area, Aspen Hill's boundaries are not officially defined. The United States Postal Service does not even use the name Aspen Hill (except as a station name in the Silver Spring Post Office), preferring to divide it between Rockville and Silver Spring. The United States Census Bureau, however, defines Aspen Hill as a Census-Designated Place located at 39°6' North, 77°5' West. The United States Geological Survey definition of Aspen Hill is centered at 39°4'46" North, 77°4'24" West, somewhat different from the Census Bureau's definition. Other organizations, such as the Aspen Hill Civic Association, have their own definitions. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 50,228.

Geography

Aspen Hill is located at 39°5'19" North, 77°4'49" West (39.088525, -77.080267)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 27.3 km² (10.5 mi²). 27.1 km² (10.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.57% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 50,228 people, 18,187 households, and 13,076 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,852.3/km² (4,799.2/mi²). There are 18,565 housing units at an average density of 684.6/km² (1,773.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 55.60% White, 20.98% African American, 0.33% Native American, 11.51% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 7.48% from other races, and 4.04% from two or more races. 15.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 18,187 households out of which 33.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.7% are married couples living together, 14.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.1% are non-families. 21.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.18.

In the town the population is spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 89.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $63,340, and the median income for a family is $73,736. Males have a median income of $44,341 versus $36,739 for females. The per capita income for the town is $27,905. 6.8% of the population and 4.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 8.0% are under the age of 18 and 6.4% are 65 or older.
