Angels in America

Angels in America is a Pulitzer Prize winning two part epic play by playwright Tony Kushner. It came out in 1993 and deals with the themes of Homosexuality, AIDS, and spirituality in the United States at the end of the second millennium. The first part is entitled Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, and the second is entitled Angels in America: Perestroika. Named by literary critic Harold Bloom in his controversial list of the most important literary works of the century, The Western Canon (1994.)

On December 7th 2003, HBO Films released its film version of the play, directed by Mike Nichols, and starring Justin Kirk, Al Pacino, Mary-Louise Parker, Ben Shenkman, Meryl Streep, Jeffrey Wright, and Emma Thompson. Kushner wrote the screenplay. It received the highest ratings of any made-for-cable movie in 2003, and any HBO movie for 2003, with over 4 million viewers its first night. Several of the cast members were nominated for Golden Globes awards for their work on the film.
