The Adamson Railway Labor Act of 1916 was passed to avert a railroadstrike. It provided the same pay for an 8 hour day as previously had been paid for a 10 hour day, and provided time and a half for overtime. The president was permitted to nationalize railroads in times of emergency. This was done in World War I.
