Adair County is a county located in the U.S. State of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 24,977. Its county seat is Kirksville6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,475 km² (569 mi²). 1,469 km² (567 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.41% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 24,977 people, 9,669 households, and 5,346 families residing in the county. The population density is 17/km² (44/mi²). There are 10,826 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (19/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.82% White, 1.20% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 1.39% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 1.26% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 9,669 households out of which 25.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.50% are married couples living together, 7.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.70% are non-families. 31.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
