Abuja, estimated population 378,700 (1991), is the capital of Nigeria. It was decided to move the national capital from Lagos in 1976, and a capital territory was chosen for its location near the center of the country. The planned city is located in the center of the Federal Capital Territory. Abuja officially became Nigeria's capital in 1991. Its current population is over 1 million people.
