Rex Beach
|
Rex Ellingwood Beach (1877 - 1949) was born in Atwood, Michigan in and studied to become a lawyer until gold was discovered in the Klondike (Alaska). Rex Beach writes with the excitment and hope that must have possessed him as gold fever urged him to the Yukon. Although his quest for gold failed, when he turned his passion and imagination to writing, his characters and action plots became bestsellers in the early 1900's. Many like The Spoilers became sucessful hollywood movies. NetState says about Rex Beach:
"Many of his stories and novels were turned into popular box office hits, made and remade, spanning the eras of silent movies and into the days of the "talkies". He not only proved himself as an author, but also as an occasional actor, producer, playright, and adventurer. He never did become a lawyer, though. Rex Beach continued to write up until his death in 1949 in Sebring, Florida."

I have a book here with the author listed as Rex Beach. But- The catch is that Rex Beach didn't write this western. It was written by Bertrand W. Sinclair. So I don't know what's up! If you know- please help. Thanks!

While reading "The Ne'er-Do-Well" by Rex Beach (you can read an e-copy at Blackmask.com) I felt as though I'd found a modest, sparkling nugget, shining amidst common pebbles which I'd sifted through.
I know very little avout the fellow, but what I've uncovered I'll share:

Beyond that, Gee I don't know the answer to iminlovewithabehr's post 2003-08-18. I'd love to know the title of the book in question & its Publication history?
Bertrand W Sinclair and Rex Beach were separate people, I mean, they were not pseudonyms for the same person, as Earle Stanley Gardner and A.A. Fair were both Gardner. Thanks!

C. L. VAWTER
Mrs. Myron E. Barnes, 501 North First street, has been apprised of the death of her brother, C. L Vawter, 75 years old, which occurred Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles.
He had for 60 years been intimately connected with the growth of the west, first as a resident of Denver, Colo., during the Civil war, and later as a merchant in Helena, Mont.
From 1900 to 1921 he served as United States marshal of the Fourth district in Alaska with headquarters at Nome. There Rex Beach met him and later chose him as the original for the character Vorhees, the deputy marshal of The Spoilers.
Funeral services and burial will take place in Los Angeles.
